The Niche Compass.

Write the one sentence that says who you're for. Then let your last ten inquiries tell you if it's true. About ten minutes.

Same work. New sentence.

1

Cross out the thing you make.

When somebody asks what you do, what comes out of your mouth? For most creatives it's the deliverable. Brand films. Headshots. Coaching sessions.

That's not your fault. Every website template asks you to list your services, so that's what we all learned to say. But a deliverable is a menu item, and people compare menu items on price.

Type it, then watch it get crossed out. It's not going anywhere. It's just not your niche.

2

A niche is a person times a problem.

Who are you for, and what's broken for them that you're great at fixing? One of those can be a little fuzzy. NEVER both. (And sharp doesn't mean tiny. It means they'd hear it and think, "wait, that's me.")

✗Both fuzzy"I help small businesses with content."
✓Sharp person"I help family-owned roofing companies get more out of their marketing."
✓Sharp problem"I help product brands whose stuff looks better in your hand than it does online."
✓✓Both sharp"I help HVAC companies get more clients without relying on Google."

The Ten Inquiry Test.

Your sentence is a guess until the market agrees with it. And the market's already been voting. Open your DMs, emails, texts and the form on your site, and go through your last ten inquiries. Not the ten best ones. The last ten.

For each one, a few words on who it was, then tap yes or no. Was it your person? Did they have your problem?
